The Centre for Dialogue for Social Impact

Our dialogue approach is about encouraging critical thinking and awareness so that participants can reflect on their lived experience and take action to effect change.

QMU researchers and communities work together to build trusting relationships through a skillful process of listening and sharing knowledge, beliefs and experiences.

What We Do

QMU is known for excellent, relevant teaching, research and knowledge exchange, and strives to create a community without borders, helping to improve people’s lives locally, nationally and internationally, and committed to social justice.

The Centre for Dialogue for Social Impact embodies this mission. A trailblazer for unique collaborations between the University and communities around the world, it demonstrates our research skills, our creativity and our ethical approach to knowledge exchange in and between communities.

The Centre’s work is at the intersection between understanding social issues affecting the world today and empowering those seeking to shape solutions and change.

Our values

 Aims

Truth and rigour

We work with many communities whose voices are seldom heard and whose perspectives may challenge policies, practice and power structures.  Dialogue is a methodology we use to explore, describe and analyse situations and experiences in co-investigations with communities which are thorough and transparent.

Inclusion

A Dialogical approach describes research in which academic methods and resources are used with communities and by communities in pursuit of research questions identified and defined by the community.  The relationship between academic/researcher and community is one of equal experts from different spheres coming together to share understanding.

Accountability

Researchers engaged in Dialogue have dual accountability to their community partners and the university to uphold ethical and quality standards in undertaking and publishing research.

QMU’s Centre for Dialogue enables staff and students to engage with people who may be excluded from mainstream society and those who face challenging health, social and political issues.  We work with partners and communities to make a real and positive impact on everyday lives.
